Witch by Jen Silverman is a dark comedy inspired by the 1621 Jacobean play The Witch of Edmonton. Set in the small English village of Edmonton, the story follows Elizabeth Sawyer, a woman ostracized by her community and branded a witch. When Scratch—a witty, charming devil—arrives offering to grant people's deepest desires in exchange for their souls, nearly everyone is tempted by love, power, wealth, or acceptance.
Elizabeth, however, proves to be an unexpected challenge. Rather than succumbing to desperation, she questions the value of hope, the cost of compromise, and the nature of freedom itself. As Scratch continues his attempts to win her over, the lives of the villagers become increasingly entangled, revealing hidden longings, surprising relationships, and the consequences of pursuing one's desires at any cost.
Filled with sharp humor, philosophical wit, and emotional depth, Witch is a modern fable that explores ambition, loneliness, love, and what it truly means to choose one's own path.
